Internet Filter vs NBN

We were discussing the election around the Memory Box office the other day and it occurred to me that at quite a superficial level, this election comes down to weighing up the Internet filter and the NBN (National Broadband Network).

The Labor party have put off the Internet filter until after the election, which personally I hope is just the first nail in the coffin. However, the Liberal party have publicly stated that they will cancel the NBN if elected

So, for me, I feel I can boil the election down into a decision around the lesser of two evils. Do I take a risk that the Labor party don't go ahead with the their plans for filtering stupidity, but push forward with the NBN? Or take a more conservative approach and go with the Liberals, hoping they don't bring in the filter, but do proceed with the NBN?

My thought process then amounts to this:

  • Let's presume Labor wins and the worst case scenario is they go ahead with the filter.
  • If the Liberals win, then they will cancel the NBN and I am yet to see a clear policy announcement that says they won't continue with the plans for the filter. So, worst case here would be to have the filter and no NBN!
  • I think the chances of Labor reversing their decision on the filter is more likely than the Liberals reversing their decision on the NBN.
  • Finally, neither of these parties get my first preference. Our great system of preferential voting means that I can vote for a minor party and still get my vote counted! Huzzah!

So, ultimately, NBN over Filter, Labor over Liberal, and both of them lower than someone who actually gives a shit.
